However, many of us have not accepted this global trend as reality. When we go to meetings such as writing conferences or workshops, we tend to feel more comfortable with people who look, act, and/or think like we do.
While it seems safer to gravitate to people who are familiar, rather than stepping out of our comfort zones, we can miss the opportunity to learn something new and valuable. In fact, you never know what a person can contribute to your writing until you take the time to talk with them.
What could happen if you try to reach out to someone who is different from you? Maybe you're shy or you fear rejection. But you'll never know until you try.
How can you reach out to people who are different from you?
- Say hello and introduce yourself.
- Smile.
- Ask about their writing experiences.
- Listen to what they have to see.
- Search for commonalities.
When you reach out to others who are different from you, it may be a blessing in disguise because you may meet a new writing friend and learn something new!
